By Karl Redgen.
As the endless hangover fades to a dull haze and the world slowly trudges back to reality, we all start to set some personal goals in order to build a plan to make a better version of ourselves. To accomplish our New Year’s resolutions, and shout the hackneyed catchphrase, “This is my year!” we each proclaim excitedly that the best way to achieve anything is with good old fashion goal setting. But what’s the goal this year? Will we join a gym, or stop drinking, catch up with old friends, write more regularly, or something else just as vague and unattainable? These all sound like very noble resolutions, but there’s nothing really noteworthy in these old worn out objectives.
This year, I’m going to do something different, something way out of my usual comfort zone. This year, I’ll be leaving the nest and setting sail to North America to try and pursue a career in screenwriting. Do I know how to sell a script? No. Do I know how to get a manager or have people read my work? Also no. Do I even know the first thing about how to break into the film industry? Not really, but that’s kind of the point. That’s what I’m going to learn and hopefully find out all these valuable lessons along the way. They say there’s no better way to learn than by jumping headfirst into the deep end. Yes, you might panic and sink to the bottom, but eventually, you’ll learn to swim, or maybe you’ll just end up flailing wildly and being saved from drowning.
So, instead of a one-year plan, I’m going to set a far more realistic time frame. In the next 1000 days, I’m going to work hard and eventually, I will sell a script. That’s it, that’s the goal, that’s the mantra that I will live my life by over these next few years. “I will sell a script.” Is this goal achievable? I have no idea, but I’m going to try. Throughout my odyssey, I will face challenges, setbacks, disappointment, and even rejection, but that’s all part of the experience.
To help get me through this bold new adventure, I’m also going to be publishing a blog; with the first post being the one you’re reading right now. This blog is going to document my journey from starting out as a nobody screenwriter living in Brisbane to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood! Or more realistically, selling an indie script to a streaming service that potentially won’t be made and that no one will even watch. Either way, I’m ready for what the experience has to offer. Bring it on!
Over the next 1000 days, I will try to update the blog as much as possible, I’ll be posting at least one post every two weeks. I will document the highs and lows of selling a screenplay, photos from my adventures, movie reviews, best of movie lists, film festivals, and anything else that may be useful or interesting. Also helping out with the blog with his own contributions will be my brother and script co-writer, who will focus more on the academic and analytical side of screenwriting and filmmaking.
So, come and join me on this journey into the unknown of new adventures of the many trials and tribulations, the beautiful highs and tragic lows, the failures, and the possible big success. If you want to keep up to date with a unique blog about the writer’s journey, or you’re looking to break into the industry yourself, then we invite you to join us on this adventure over the next 1000 days.
Let’s do this!
